Where I come from

My digital career emerged early on. At the age of 14, I started teaching myself how to code on my first computer. Basic, Pascal and Delphi were the languages of the day and I took pride in any self-taught progress I made. It was the time of the coming of the web. So I started to dig myself in Webdesign. The success and joy of my humble beginnings let me get on track. At high school, I played around with two study options - history and computer sciences. I finally chose the latter over the first and enrolled myself to Media Informatics and Psychology at the Dresden University of Technology.

For three years, I learned loads of things about information theory, software development, technology, digital media and computer aided design. Even though I enjoyed my studies, I always felt that something crucial was missing. All the time, I longed for a broader scope of thinking, less bound to utility, pragmatism and technology. Hence, I decided to quit my studies and turned to the humanities instead. From that point on, I dedicated my intellectual zeal to Modern History and American Studies with ceaseless delight. A decision that I never had any regrets about and still benefit from.

However, the digital world never fully let me go. During a voluntary long term internship in 2006, I realized how much I enjoyed being part of a highly motivated and interprofessional team. It became crystal-clear to me how to leverage all my talents best. Bridging the best of both worlds. After these first experiences, a terrific time abroad and successfully finishing my studies, I started working at a digital agency in Dresden. After three good years, I moved to Wiesbaden and took a new job which helped me a lot to level up my skills. Another great five years are gone and now it has come the time to move forward again.

In the end of 2016 I took the chance on a new challenge. As Head of Product Development in Wiesbaden, I am now in charge of leading and improving the way we create our products. This means especially the coaching and promoting of agile methodologies and ideas in the company. As Certified Scrum Product Owner, my focus lies especially on that part of the agile Scrum framework.

DI UNTERNEHMER - digital products, Wiesbaden, 2013-2018

While working at DI UNTERNEHMER, I was glad to take part in a fundamental turn of the company itself. The strategic orientation changed from a creative digital agency to a provider for web-based solutions with a strong technical impact. Another big shift was the introduction of agile methods of software development in form of SCRUM. And all that fit me well. I got the opportunity to become part of the broader management team to do the twist. As Product Consultant I became concerned with the development of process oriented business applications. And I like it.

When we moved from the Elbe to the Rhine river, I started working at DI UNTERNEHMER. At first, it was a lot of professional continuity to my previous job. As Project Manager and soon team lead, I was in charge of the making and maintenance of corporate and product websites. It was great to gain experiences in such diverse domains as sports, finance, pharmacy and e-commerce. Gradually, my job got a rather technical spin, as projects became more complex and systemic.

My time at the GHI in Washington in spring 2007 was undoubtly one of the best of my life. It was an exciting and eye-opening period that helped me to reconsider my German and European identity. The work at the GHI brought me very close to the American political system and helped me to understand this sometimes contradictory nation and culture, which I very much appreciate. My time in Washington fully enlighted my desire, to leave Germany for a much longer period someday and to see more of the world.

On the occasion of the 800th anniversery of the city of Dresden, many projects were done to celebrate this event and to take a look at it's history. I worked at the ZukunftsWerk Stadt team that focussed on the future instead. Our centerpiece project was the ZukunftsBild. Citizens were asked to form their visions and hopes for the future of Dresden. The results were assembled to a huge installation and presented to the public. I was responsible for the sorting, editing and collecting of the contributions as well as the digital exhibition.

Education

Modern History & American Studies (M.A.)

Technische Universität Dresden, 2003-2008

After quitting Computer Sciences, I gave another passion of my youth a try. I took courses in Modern History, Medieval History and American Studies. The latter especially pushed by 9/11. The Humanities turned out to be a completely different experience of thought. I was totally overwhelmed by so many new ideas, facts and methodologies. It felt as if my mind started all over and soaked all information up with great fervor. The studies sharpened my senses for the social nature of the human being, the construction of information and how it all boils down in what we call reality.

Media Informatics & Psychology

Technische Universität Dresden, 2000-2003

I started developing code at the age of 14 and really liked it. After leaving second level school with advanced courses in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, and English, I decided to study Media Informatics with Psychology as minor subject at the Dresden University of Technology then. Even though I was quite successful during my studies, I felt that something was missing and decided to quit. Nevertheless, I took with me a lot of invaluable experiences and knowledge I would benefit from later on.
